About this course

Whether you’re formally diagnosed, you recognise ADHD traits in yourself or you simply want to understand this widely misunderstood condition better, this course is a great place to start. Across six sessions, ADHD consultant and coach Dr Alex Conner — who was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and co-hosts the UK’s most popular ADHD podcast, The ADHD Adults — guides you through the science of ADHD, treatment and medication, executive function and emotional dysregulation, ADHD coaching, ADHD at work and at home, and what comes next, all grounded in evidence-based neuroscience, psychology and pharmacology. This is the complete recording of a much-loved live course, and it was made to be interactive. Alex regularly puts a question to the group, pauses for answers, then reads out and responds to what people share in the chat — tips, frustrations and plenty of hard-won wisdom. You can’t type into that chat yourself, but the questions work just as well for you: pause, have your own think, then hear how everyone else answered. It’s a warm, chatty listen, a bit like a good podcast, and every session ends with an audience Q&A.

The course, session by session

Dr Alex Conner — Not a Single Nut: The science of what ADHD is, and isn’t
Session 1

Not a Single Nut: The science of what ADHD is, and isn’t

with Dr Alex Conner

Alex opens the course by asking what ADHD actually is — through the eyes of a doctor (the three presentations and the diagnostic criteria), a neuroscientist (genes, brain networks and dopamine) and the people who live with it. He unpicks “neurodiverse”, “neurodivergent” and “neurotypical”, tests the commonest myths against the evidence, from over-diagnosis to bad parenting, and offers a realistic take on the “superpower” debate.

  • How ADHD is diagnosed, and why it’s so badly named
  • What the brain science and genetics actually show
  • Neurodiverse, neurodivergent, neurotypical: what the words really mean
  • Why “ADHD is a superpower” is mostly myth, and what isn’t
Dr Alex Conner — Pills Don’t Build Skills: How ADHD treatments really work
Session 2

Pills Don’t Build Skills: How ADHD treatments really work

with Dr Alex Conner

Is ADHD a difference or a disorder — and should we be treating it at all? Alex explains the brain networks and dopamine thresholds behind ADHD, then walks through how methylphenidate and lisdexamfetamine work, how titration and shared care operate, and the side effects he lives with himself. He weighs the evidence for CBT, coaching, exercise, meditation and time in nature, and explains why he’s sceptical of supplements and big placebo claims.

  • How stimulant and non-stimulant medications actually work
  • Why ADHD may be about dopamine activity rather than levels
  • How diagnosis, titration and shared care agreements work
  • Which non-drug approaches have evidence, and which supplements don’t
Dr Alex Conner — Planning Isn’t Doing: Executive function, emotions and rejection sensitivity
Session 3

Planning Isn’t Doing: Executive function, emotions and rejection sensitivity

with Dr Alex Conner

Alex turns to the traits most adults with ADHD say they struggle with most, yet which sit outside the diagnostic criteria: executive function and emotional dysregulation. He explores working memory, time blindness, cognitive flexibility and risk, explains why “inappropriate” emotions should be judged against your own values, and unpacks rejection sensitivity, people pleasing and the menopause link — before sharing practical strategies, from golden time to “double bubble” for task paralysis.

  • Why executive function and emotions aren’t in the diagnostic criteria
  • How working memory, time blindness and task paralysis work
  • Why rejection sensitivity drives people pleasing, and what helps
  • Practical tricks: golden time, small specific tasks and “double bubble”
Dr Alex Conner — Five Bums on a Bench: ADHD coaching and how to coach yourself
Session 4

Five Bums on a Bench: ADHD coaching and how to coach yourself

with Dr Alex Conner

Alex, an ADHD coach himself, takes a refreshingly sceptical look at coaching: what it is, why anyone can call themselves a coach, and what the evidence really says. He explains why good coaching avoids giving advice, why classic coaching models trip up ADHD brains, and how to coach yourself — with open “five bums on a bench” questions, short-term goals built on long-term values, the seven whys and a worry quarter.

  • Why coaching is unregulated, and what the evidence really says
  • How to ask open, non-directive questions and truly listen
  • Why standard coaching models trip up ADHD brains
  • Self-coaching tools: short-term goals, the seven whys, worry quarters
Dr Alex Conner — Batman, Not Superman: The real burdens of ADHD at work and at home
Session 5

Batman, Not Superman: The real burdens of ADHD at work and at home

with Dr Alex Conner

Alex looks honestly at the burdens of ADHD: what the averages in the research do and don’t mean for you, why strengths are learned rather than innate superpowers, and the real costs of ADHD that goes undiagnosed and unsupported. He explores why diagnosis needs two environments, how ADHD shows up in relationships, education and work, the hidden cost of masking, and practical strategies built on communication, consideration and compassion.

  • Why research averages don’t define your personal experience
  • The evidence on ADHD strengths, and why learned beats innate
  • How ADHD affects relationships, study and the workplace
  • The three Cs, defining a win, and asking for adjustments
Dr Alex Conner — Healthy Strengths: What next for you and ADHD
Session 6

Healthy Strengths: What next for you and ADHD

with Dr Alex Conner

In the final session, Alex revisits the ideas people find hardest to explain to family and friends — working memory, time, decision paralysis and delayed gratification — and why ADHD is best understood as neurological. He then asks what you want to do next, from self-understanding to advocacy and coaching, and helps you find your “healthy strengths”, before an extended Q&A on childhood trauma, medication side effects, disability rights, careers and finding a coach.

  • Simple ways to explain ADHD to family, friends and sceptics
  • Why working memory, not memory overall, is the real problem
  • How to find your healthy strengths and plan your next steps
  • What the evidence says about ADHD and childhood trauma

Common questions

How do I watch the course?

As soon as your payment goes through, we email you a personal link to your private course hub — all six sessions and their transcripts in one place. Each recording plays in Zoom’s own player in your browser: no Zoom account, app or password needed, and it works on any device.

How long do I have access?

You can watch and rewatch as much as you like until October 2027 — plenty of time to take the course at your own pace, whether you watch it all in a weekend or take one session a week, like the live group did.

Is this live? Can I join in?

It’s the complete recording of the popular six-session course Dr Alex Conner ran live in autumn 2024, so you can watch whenever suits you — there are no set times. Because it was made for a live group, it’s conversational: Alex regularly asks the group a question, pauses for answers, then reads out and responds to what people share in the chat. You can’t post in that chat yourself, but the questions work just as well for you — pause, have your own think, then hear how everyone else answered. Many people find those exchanges one of the best parts: a warm, honest listen, a bit like a good podcast.

Do I need a diagnosis to take the course?

Not at all. It’s for anyone who’s formally diagnosed, waiting for an assessment, recognises ADHD traits in themselves, or simply wants to understand this widely misunderstood condition — including partners, parents, friends and professionals. No prior knowledge is needed.

Do I get slides or handouts?

Yes — Alex’s slides for sessions 1 to 5 are on your course hub to download (the final session is mostly recap and conversation, so there’s no separate deck). Every session also comes with a full, tidied transcript, so you can read back over anything at your own pace.

Can I get a CPD certificate?

Yes — you can add a personalised CPD certificate (12 CPD hours) at checkout. It arrives attached to your course email, made out in your name.

Is this medical advice?

No — the course is educational. Alex explains what the research says about ADHD, its treatments and what helps, but he doesn’t diagnose or prescribe, and it isn’t a substitute for personal advice from your GP or an ADHD clinician.

What if it’s not for me?

We offer a full, no-quibble refund — just ask. If the course isn’t what you hoped for, reply to your receipt and we’ll sort it, no questions asked.
