About this talk

What can our dreams, fantasies and inner conflicts reveal about who we really are? This is an introduction to the psychology of Carl Jung and his groundbreaking ideas about the hidden depths of the mind. A founding father of depth psychology, Jung explored the intersections of psychology, mythology, religion, art and spirituality. Through his study of dreams, symbols and ancient belief systems, he developed influential concepts including the collective unconscious, archetypes, the shadow self, synchronicity and individuation. Dr Rachel Newsome explores Jung's key theories and how he combined ancient wisdom traditions with modern psychology — including his technique of active imagination, sometimes described as “dreaming while awake”. Along the way, she considers how Jung's work speaks to alienation, meaninglessness and spiritual crisis, and why his ideas remain so relevant in an age of anxiety, burnout and disconnection.
